It's the 18th century.
Powdered wigs, King George (all 4), corsets, social gatherings, and the revolution (American, that is) all thrived. As with any period, there are several class distinctions…some more orthodox than the others. On one side of the spectrum, you have the Aristocrats. Pretty and polished on the outside, these wealthy people tend to have huge skeletons in their closets. The Commoners live humbly and abide by the rules set by the aristocrats. Then the Pirates...well. They speak for themselves.
THE ARISTOCRATS
Elizabeth Swann
The only child of the Governor Weatherby Swann. She and her father came to Port Royal from England when Elizabeth was only 12. Even at that young age, she showed a signs of a budding independent personality and a natural curiosity for things a girl of her status shouldn’t poke her nose into. Eight years later, it would be that same curiosity that got her into a whole world of trouble.
James Norrington
A former Commodore in the British Royal Navy, he became acquainted with Elizabeth Swann and her father on the journey from England to Port Royal. Twelve years her senior, he was not surprised when she decided to give her love to another. As a loyal servant to his King, he valiantly chased after all wrong-doers…including pirates. After a cruel twist of fate, James found himself among the pirates, only to end up back where he started. He wondered daily whether or not it was all worth it in the end.
Cutler Beckett
After being appointed a lord and representative of the King himself as the head of the East India Trading Company, Cutler wasted no time at all in gathering up all his arrest warrants and charging straight into Port Royal. After meeting some resistance in the form of Elizabeth Swann and William Turner, along with some of their…exotic…friends, Cutler realized that he was dealing with more complex people than he was used to. No matter. He was always fond of a challenge.
THE COMMONER
William Turner
Life changed drastically for Will Turner when he was pulled aboard the HMS Dauntless and left in the care of Elizabeth Swann. After becoming a skilled blacksmith, he never forgot his place, and knew not to hope too much for a promotion, so to speak. It wasn’t until a strange visitor landed in Port Royal that Will learned (albeit the hard way) that anything was possible with clever manipulation and all around charm.
THE PIRATES
Captain Jack Sparrow
His one love is the sea, and his most prized possession is his ship: the Black Pearl. The only issue with that is that it keeps getting stolen. After quite a few brushes with the higher ups (i.e. the East India Trading Company and the British Royal Navy) and even more brushes with death, this quirky pirate knows a bit more than he lets on…and tends to divulge such information at inappropriate/convenient times.
Captain Hector Barbossa
After marooning his former captain and stealing the Black Pearl for himself, Captain Barbossa soon learned that he had bitten off more than he could chew. After spending years cursed, he was finally freed by his death. But it would take more than death to keep this steadfast pirate from the sea. Besides. Stealing the Black Pearl from under Jack’s nose was far too fun.
Captain Davy Jones
“Do you fear death?” is a phrase that has passed this tentacle-ridden captain's lips often. Charged with the duty of shepherding the souls of the dead to the other side, Davy did his task faithfully, until he returned to shore ten years later to find he had been betrayed by the one he loved. In a fit of revenge, he betrayed her to the nine Pirate Lords and began to wreak havoc on the seas to satisfy his own heart…or lack thereof.
